4 Men in a Boat
Boot&Boat (LV)
Four dancers in a perfomance of a Latvian choreographer Ruta Nordmane brings out a simple men language, little harsh and straight-out, but still sensitive, beautiful and seductive.
“Fantastic how easy the dancers can perform all those incredible moves. It’s only their breath that tells me about how tired they might be at the end of the work. Though there are only men on the stage, one should remember that the author is a woman. I can only admire how Rūta could guess all the small details of a man’s inner world and to bring it all up to the stage with her choreography. It is definitely a superb woman’s story translated into the man’s language”

What happens to us and our reception of a work of art, when everything is obvious, having been explained to us beforehand? A short performance consisting of two dancers, two costume changes, two masks, an easel. Openness, simplicity, directness and and a lot of liberating humor contrasting with Scandinavian minimalism. The Danish title Forestillinger is apt, as it can mean “performance”, or “impression!, as well as “imagination”.
“I am primarily interested in movement as a projection of the audience’s own signification and not as a bearer of significance in itself. Therefore, I am trying to create material onto which the audience can project themselves. I am not interested in what movement means but rather in what it can mean. A precise statement needs no work of art. If you know exactly what you want to say, there is no reason to make art.”
